What Kind of Gamer Are You? An Introduction to Genre Analysis

RPG, strategy, action, sports... the genres in your library are one of the most basic building blocks of your player profile. How does genre analysis work, and what does it reveal?

Why does genre matter?

The genres a player spends the most time in reflect not just taste, but also how they approach a game: a strategy-heavy library points to planning and patience, while an action-heavy one favors reflexes and split-second decisions. Steam's tag system links every game to genres marked by the community, which is what makes this data analyzable in the first place.

SteamPersona's genre analyzer calculates the dominant tags in your library and your genre diversity to show whether you're focused on a single genre or spread across a wide range.

Diversity vs. specialization

Some players prefer to specialize in a single genre (strategy games only, for example) and build deep knowledge there; others prioritize variety by roaming across many genres. Neither is "more correct" than the other. Both represent a valid and different kind of player profile.

Seeing your own genre breakdown can inform your next purchase: if there's a genre missing from your library entirely, that gap can turn into a deliberate opportunity to explore something new.
